Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

What is a balcony power station?

A Balcony power stationalso known as a plug-in solar device or mini-photovoltaic system, uses a photovoltaic module to convert solar energy into electricity.

It is used to efficiently convert solar energy into usable electricity. The size is limited to a maximum of two modules and the feed-in to the power grid must not exceed 600 watts (800 watts from 1 January 2024).

These systems are usually Connected directly to the house or flat circuitby plugging them into a socket. This enables users to utilise solar energy generated on site to cover their energy needs.

What components does a balcony power station consist of?

1. solar modules: Convert sunlight into electrical energy.

2. micro inverter: Convert generated direct current (DC) into alternating current (AC) for feeding into the grid.

3. mounting material/mounting system: Secure solar modules on the balcony or the selected area.

4. cable to the socket: Conducts the generated electricity to the socket or into the power grid.

These components generate and transmit solar energy from the balcony power station to the grid or for personal use.

Wieland or Schuko plug? Which is the right one?

There are two options when choosing the plug for a balcony power station: Schuko plug or Wieland plug. Here are the facts:

A balcony power station with a standardSchuko plugr is just as sichere and legal like one with a Wieland plug.

Balcony power stations sold in Germany generally have Mains and system protection (NA protection) to prevent voltage when the plug is disconnected.

The choice between Wieland and Schuko is individual. A Schuko plug is easier to install, while a Wieland plug requires special equipment. Both options are permitted.

Which solar system is the best?

The "best" solar system depends on individual requirements.

A Balcony power stationespecially intended for tenants, is a Compact option for limited space and easy installation.

A PV system is more extensive and requires more space, but offers higher energy production.

More information can be found in the comparison "Balcony power plant vs. PV system".

Can the landlord prohibit me from installing a balcony power station?

According to the Judgement may landlords a mini PV system do not generally prohibitas it serves the national objective of environmental protection.

Please note: The balcony power system must be permitted by building regulations, visually unobtrusive, easy to remove and professionally installed without detracting from the property.

Tip: If there is no clear provision in the tenancy agreement, it is still advisable to speak to the landlord to avoid conflicts later on

Note: Approval is mandatory for attachment to the house wall, roof or balcony parapet.

Does a balcony power station make sense for a rented flat?

A balcony power station is both for tenants as well as owners a rental flat is a worthwhile investment.

As the owner, you can Invest in solar energy for the long termthe Increase property value and from Benefit from independence.

Tenants can Reduce electricity costsuse environmentally friendly energy and Flexibility of an easily transportable system.

How do I register the balcony power station?

Every balcony power plant, regardless of its output, must be registered with the local Network operator be registered.

A template for the appropriate registration letter is available here to send them to the local network operator.

The system is also “Market Master Data Register of the Federal Network Agency (MaStR)" via the online service.

What are the different operating modes of the balcony power station and how do they work?

Normal: In this mode, the micro inverter works as usual by converting direct current (DC) into alternating current (AC). The AC electricity generated is either consumed in the household or fed into the public grid.

Zero Export Control (zero feed-in mode): In Zero Export Control mode, the microinverter adjusts its energy production to ensure that no electricity is fed back into the public grid. Instead, only the electricity demand in the house is covered.

Standby: Standby mode is activated when there is either no load in the household or the value for the export control on the DTU has been set to "0" in zero export control mode

How do I connect the balcony power station?

Note:
1. it is essential to note the serial number of the inverter before installation, as this is required for registration with the Hoymiles Cloud.

2. the modules are mounted next to each other (see illustration).

3. the inverter is mounted on the rail behind the modules (see red dot in the drawing).

Where should I install the balcony power station?

Before installing the balcony power station, it is important to choose the installation position. Optimal are Locations with long periods of sunlight and preferably in southwards, z. B. Balcony railing, garden shed roof or carport.

How do I clean the balcony power station?

To clean solar modules, use a soft sponge and Limescale-free water. Rainwater is also suitable. Take care not to scratch the modules so as not to impair their performance.

How many watts of power can my balcony power station have?

Due to the current legal regulations in the area of solar systems, a balcony power plant in Germany currently have an output of 600 watts. From 1 January 2024, this limit will be increased to 800 watts. To avoid having to wait for this change, become Inverter with an output of 800 wattsofferedwhich can be throttled down to 600 watts.

Is it possible to reduce the output of an inverter and then cancel it again?

Yes, ours Interchangeable hopper with 800 watts you can independently with the help of the Hoymiles DTU-Lite WThrottle LAN stick to 600 watts. The special thing about it is that this power reduction can be easily reset to 800 watts with a simple WLAN update as soon as the new de minimis limit comes into force. This enables an immediate increase in the output of your balcony power station without additional hardware costs.

You can find the exact steps for throttling in the Instructions .

Are there subsidy programmes for balcony power plants?

It There is no nationwide subsidy programme for balcony power plants. The subsidisation of plug-in solar systems depends on the region and varies in the federal states and municipalities, both in terms of the subsidy rates and the conditions. It is advisable to enquire with the local authorities or energy supply companies about the current subsidy rates. Funding opportunities in Yours Region to enquire.
