A balcony power plant turns solar energy into electricity

Functionality Upright - Balcony Power Plant - How it works

1. sunlight hits solar cells

A photovoltaic system converts sunlight into electrical energy. This process takes place in individual solar modules, which consist of many individual solar cells. The sunlight stimulates electrons in the solar cells to move. This creates direct electrical current. Balcony power plants usually use 1-2 photovoltaic modules. These can be mounted on the balcony, in the garden, on the facade or on roofs.

2. direct current becomes alternating current

In order to use the electricity generated by photovoltaics in the household, an inverter converts the direct current into alternating current. In balcony power plants, so-called micro inverters with power classes between 300W and 800W are used for this purpose.

3. the electricity is fed into the house grid

The inverter is connected via a normal cable to any socket in the house network. The electricity is now in the house grid and is used by all devices. Surplus electricity is fed into the public power grid. The electricity always follows the path of least resistance. This means that the house's own solar power is used first. If more power is needed, the remaining power requirement is covered by the power grid.

1. structure

The most important thing is to choose the right mounting solution. For this we have various mounting sets on offer.

The components (inverter, PV modules) are simply plugged together and then connected to a socket of your choice.

Make sure your modules are well positioned: They should face south (or south-east or south-west) and ideally be tilted at an angle of 30° to 40° towards the sun.

2. registration

Register your balcony power plant with your grid operator and register it in the market master data register.

No electrician is required to register the balcony power station!

3. saving electricity

Now you can plug your balcony power station into the socket and produce your own green electricity. This saves you €200 to €300 a year!

The following three steps will get you to your own powerhouse!

Assembling the components

The assembly does not require any manual skills. The components are simply plugged together. This takes a few minutes. However, the assembly on the wall or roof should be well planned and carried out professionally.

Assembly solutions

There are several ways to install the PV modules of the balcony power plant.

The "flat" mounting solution is particularly suitable for roof terraces or when the modules are installed in the garden - in other words, anywhere where the ground is flat.

Mounting solution "Balcony" is suitable for those who have a suitable balcony railing.

Alignment

It is best to face south, with an inclination of about 30° for flat mounting and about 70° for balcony mounting. Since the sun is not so high in winter, the inclination can be increased somewhat. In general, make sure that the PV modules are shaded as little as possible.

More about registration

1. obtain landlord permission
  • Check lease agreement: Check the contract for clauses that regulate the installation of PV systems on the balcony or facade.
  • If clause is present: Ask here with the landlord politely for a possible change of mind and point to the judgment of the district court Stuttgart of 30 March 2021 (AG Stuttgart, AZ 37 C 2283/20) points out. According to the ruling, landlords may not generally prohibit a mini PV system because it serves the state objective of environmental protection.
  • Note: The balcony power system must be permitted by building law, visually inconspicuous, easily removable and professionally installed without affecting the property. If the lease agreement does not contain a clear regulation, it is still advisable to talk to the landlord to avoid future conflicts. In the case of attachment to the house wall, roof or balcony parapet, approval is mandatory.
2. registration with the network operator

In Germany, every balcony power plant must be registered with the local grid operator regardless of its output.

  • Determining the local grid operator:
The grid operator acts as the owner of the power lines in the respective region. It distributes the electricity to the end consumers, including the apartments. Each building has an assigned distribution network operator, which cannot be changed, and the information regarding the network operator can be found on the electricity bill. There is either a 13-digit code or the name of the operator. If a code is available, the corresponding name can be found in the list of grid operators can be looked up. Has there been a move?
  • Implementation depending on the service:
A template for the appropriate registration letter is provided by the local network operator.
(Please note: In some cases, grid operators explicitly stipulate that a specialist must carry out the installation. Check the official website of your distribution network operator in advance).
An electrician must be consulted for PV systems with an output of over 600 watts. (However, it is planned to raise this limit to 800 watts in accordance with the forthcoming legal adjustments.)In the case of solar systems with an output of up to 600 watts, non-professionals can also carry out this notification free of charge and independently.
  • Consequence of registration = new meter?
The decision on the necessity of replacing the current electricity meter depends on the individual meter model. However, old electricity meters with a rotary dial (Ferraris meters) definitely need to be replaced. Since electricity can flow in both directions these days, this requires a modern meter with electronic sensing to measure both inflow and outflow. An electric meter must have a backstop to function properly. If it is necessary to replace the meter, the advantage is that most network operators do not charge for this.

  • Tip: It is recommended to register the balcony power plant early and to inform yourself about the operating regulations of the PV system in order to avoid possible penalties.

3. registration with the Federal Network Agency
  • Registration: Registration takes place via the "Registration assistant for operators of power generation plants". of the Federal Network Agency. The time period for this is one month after commissioning of the balcony power plant. (This process of registration will also be simplified: In the future, it will be sufficient to simply register or deregister plants with an output of up to 800 watts with the Federal Network Agency).
  • Do you need help with registration?
For help here the step by step video of the Federal Network Agency.
  • There is a simplified application process for systems up to 600 watts. A permit is not required
  • Registration takes place with the local network operator and with the Federal Network Agency in the Market Master Data Register (MaStR). Both registrations are free of charge.
  • Failure to register may result in fines.
  • From 2024, it is expected that only registration in the market master data register will be required.

Power Saving

How much money do I actually save?

Since common balcony power plants have no storage, the saving depends strongly on the base load. In a 100 sqm apartment, this is around 400W. This includes for example refrigerator, stand-by devices, wifi router, heating and water heating, smart home devices, etc.

For a 600W balcony power plant, it can be assumed that it produces an average of 2.4 kWh of electricity per day. Since balcony power plants feed directly into the house grid and therefore excess energy flows into the public grid, about 50% of the electricity is actually used. One thus saves over 400 kWh per year.

At an electricity price of 0.35 €/kWh, this makes an annual saving of approx. 150 €.

Balcony power plant = your contribution to climate protection

1. CO2 emissions: The balcony power plant produces renewable electricity and reduces the need for fossil fuels, thereby reducing CO2 emissions.

2. global warming: by reducing greenhouse gas emissions, the power plant contributes to slowing global warming.

3. air quality: it produces emission-free electricity, thereby improving air quality by reducing harmful emissions from fossil fuels.

4. resources: The use of the balcony power plant conserves fossil fuel resources and promotes the further development of renewable energy technologies.

In short, a seemingly small power plant that nevertheless makes a significant contribution to climate protection.
